- Overwriting vs. Physical Destruction: Destruction is ideal if there is no life left or a drive is too broken to use. Overwriting is best if you plan to reuse a drive when refurbishing or repairing other devices.
- Certificate of Destruction: When a device is processed, you need a Certificate of Data Destruction to prove the data was destroyed before the item moved to the next steps.

Ideally, you can recapture some of the original purchase cost through the value of reusable parts. If the item has no value left, recycling ensures that the metals, glass, and plastics found in electronic devices return to manufacturing streams, reducing the need for new raw materials.
