Goodwill Industries of Silicon Valley along with Electronic Recyclers are teaming with Best Buy to host a free electronic waste recycling event on Saturday, August 18th at the Best Buy located at 5065 Almaden Expressway in San Jose from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

E-waste contains hazardous lead and mercury, and these toxic substances eventually leak and contaminate landfills. It is illegal to dispose of e-waste in the trash since residential waste eventually enters the municipal waste stream. By recycling e-waste, everyone can help to divert toxins from entering the local environment. The collection drive gives local residents the opportunity to safely dispose of their computer monitors, televisions and cell phones.

Proceeds from the collection drive will allow Goodwill to continue to fund its skills development and job placement programs. These programs assist individuals with various barriers to employment realize their fullest potential within the workforce. “Our partnership with Electronic Recyclers provides additional support and resources for our mission and demonstrates Goodwill’s continuing emphasis on giving-back to the many communities we serve,” said Frank Kent, President and CEO of Goodwill Industries.

“We are so proud to be partnered with Goodwill Industries,” said John S. Shegerian, Chairman and CEO of Electronic Recyclers. “They have done so much for the people of this community and communities all around the world – transforming lives and bringing assistance and training to so many. They are an extremely professional organization and I am honored to be associated with them. I look forward to the good works we will be doing together – keeping the toxins from electronic waste out of landfills.”

Each year, Californians replace hundreds of thousands of TVs, computers, monitors and other electronic devices. Plus, they store literally millions more that are not used any more in homes, garages and businesses. Electronic products contain valuable resources such as metal, plastic and glass, which can and should be recycled instead of thrown away.
