Goodwill Industries of Silicon Valley along with Electronic Recylers International are teaming with Best Buy to host a free electronic waste recycling event on Saturday, March 8th, at the Best Buy located at 5065 Almaden Expressway in San Jose from 9 am to 3 pm.

E-waste contains hazardous lead and mercury, and these toxic substances eventually leak and contaminate landfills. It is illegal to dispose of e-waste in the trash since residential waste eventually enters the municipal waste stream. By recycling e-waste, everyone can help to divert toxins from entering the local environment. The collection drive gives local residents the opportunity to safely dispose of their computer monitors, televisions and cell phones.

Proceeds from the collection drive will support Goodwill of Silicon Valley’s Institute for Career Development (ICD). The goal of Goodwill’s ICD program is to help people with barriers to employment obtain and retain jobs paying competitive wages. Goodwill’s program is distinguished by its comprehensive, case-management model, including career planning, self-efficacy training, professional counseling, vocational training, financial and VESL training, advocacy, and job placement/retention services. In 2007, ICD provided employment services to over 2500 individuals.

“We are so proud to be partnered with Goodwill Industries of Silicon Valley,” said John S. Shegerian, Chairman and CEO of Electronic Recyclers International. “They have done so much for the people of this community and communities all around the world – transforming lives and bringing assistance and training to so many. They are an extremely professional organization and we are honored to be associated with them. I look forward to the good works we will be doing together – keeping the toxins from electronic waste out of landfills.”

Each year, Californians replace hundreds of thousands of TVs, computers, monitors and other electronic devices. Plus, they store literally millions more that are not used any more in homes, garages and businesses. Electronic products contain valuable resources such as metal, plastic and glass, which can and should be recycled instead of thrown away.
