Waste Management Inc.’s recycling arm, Waste Management Recycle America, has joined the Coalition for American Electronics Recycling (CAER), a group of recyclers pushing for the passage of the legislation that would prohibit the export of electronic waste to developing countries.

Alcoa, the world´s largest aluminum producer, has also joined the coalition, the group announced.

“The addition of industry-leading cornerstone organizations such as Waste Management and Alcoa is further proof of a growing consensus that the Responsible Electronics Recycling Act is good for business and will create much-needed jobs and enhance sustainability,” said John Shegerian, president of Electronic Recyclers International and a CAER committee member, in a statement.

Bill Caeser, president of Waste Management Recycle America, said in a statement that the company strongly agrees with limiting the export of hazardous electronic waste.

The announcement comes on the heels of Sims Recycling Solutions, a subsidiary of Sims Metal Management, joining the group in December.
