Today Electronic Recyclers International (ERI), the nation’s leading recycler of electronic waste, and Girl Up, a campaign of the United Nations Foundation, announced a partnership that utilizes BuyBackTech, an online platform, that allows Girl Up supporters to recycle gently-used electronics that can be resold. Through Girl Up, the profits from all refurbished and resold items will go directly to help girls all over the world go to school, see a doctor, and stay safe from violence.

The partnership was announced today at the second annual Girl Up Leadership Summit in Washington, D.C. At the Summit, ERI Chairman and CEO John Shegerian presented Girl Up Director Melissa Hillebrenner with a check for $10,000 – funds resulting from recent a recent ERI/Girl Up e-waste collection event in New York City.

“It’s a tremendous honor and privilege to be partnering with Girl Up,” said Shegerian. “Our recent events with Girl Up Clubs in New York City were so successful, it truly does make sense that we take the concept on the road. Together with the United Nations Foundation and this extraordinary group of young women behind the Girl Up campaign, we can help people all over the country become more environmentally responsible recyclers of electronics while contributing resulting funds to an important cause at the same time.”

“This partnership is an innovative way for Girl Up supporters to engage with the campaign,” said Hillebrenner. “Through recycling old electronics, we are giving people the opportunity to empower girls around the world while also being environmentally conscious. Together, Girl Up and ERI are both working for a sustainable world where girls thrive.”
