Delivering on its commitment to create a more sustainable government, the U.S. General Services Administration hosted its seventh federally organized home and office electronics recycling event and collected more than 19 tons of electronic waste. All DFC agencies and Lakewood residents were invited to drop off their electronics.
“GSA is proud to sponsor the seventh electronic waste recycling event on the Denver Federal Center campus,” said Sue Damour, Rocky Mountain Regional Administrator. “Keeping e-waste out of landfills while providing data privacy through certified destruction supports the federal government’s sustainability goals and boosts the DFC’s goal of being the greenest campus in the country by 2020.”
Participants were encouraged to bring all of their unwanted or broken electronic items such as:
- Printers and fax machines
- Keyboards and mice
- Stereo and network equipment
- Cell phones
- Servers
- Telecom equipment
- All business/office electronics
- Home computers
Recycling was free of charge with the exception of computer monitors and televisions. There was a five dollar recycling fee for monitors and $10 fee for televisions.
All GSA recycling vendors are certified and provide proof of safe destruction of all materials. This year, GSA partnered with Electronic Recyclers International, Inc., a local company with R2 and e-Stewards certifications.
Last year, the DFC recycled more than 17 tons of e-waste. This is the equivalent to keeping 152 cars off of the road annually, and saves 600 pounds of air pollution from our environment. The regional electronics recycling program is an educational platform for both federal employees and the general public on how to properly manage their electronic wastes.
