As the largest purchaser of information technology in the world, the U.S. government has an important responsibility to ensure that used federal electronics are recycled in a responsible manner that protects the sensitive data found on those devices as well as human health and the environment.
Federal agencies, pursuant to GSA Bulletin FMR B-34 – Disposal of Federal Electronic Assets, should do the following:
- Send used federal electronics to an e-Steward and NAID AAA recycler, such as ERI, for recycling.
- Destroy data in a manner that complies with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) 800-88, Guidelines for Media Sanitization which ERI’s software based and physical data destruction procedures follow.
- Do not dispose of used federal electronics in landfills or incinerators.
- Reporting on federal used electronics sent for recycling which is made easy through ERI’s customized reporting and online tracking technology, Optech™.
