Data breaches are becoming increasingly common. Data can be compromised for many reasons, including negligent employees, phishing attacks, web-based attacks, and malware. Because so many businesses experience data breaches, it’s important for every business to be prepared. Not only should every business actively work to prevent data breaches, but they should also put a plan in place that outlines how to react to a breach in the event that one does occur. Preparing for a data breach can be a tall task for most businesses, but ERI can help.
ERI is the first company in the ITAD and electronic recycling industry to offer clients a unique Data Security Dashboard program. The program consists of two separate components, a Privacy Assessment and Breach Reporting Service. These two tools work together to ensure that businesses have done everything they can to prevent a breach and are prepared to respond in the event that their data is compromised.
Privacy Assessment
ERI’s Privacy Assessment is a self-assessment tool created by experts in the data privacy field. This tool is designed to help clients assess how they handle personally identifiable information (PII) such as Social Security numbers, credit card numbers, and contact information.
Clients can complete the assessment online at their own pace. The system will then use the answers to determine areas that need to be improved upon in order to protect PII or comply with local or industry-specific regulations. These results will be compiled in an easy-to-read list of suggestions for clients to reference at their earliest convenience. By completing the suggested items on the customized list, clients can reduce their risk of a data breach.
Clients who make an effort to reduce their risk of a data breach will receive a Certification of Completion with an ID Stay Safe® Trust Shield Program seal. This certificate should be proudly displayed so customers know that their data is safe.
Breach Reporting Service
Sometimes, a data breach can occur even if a business has made an effort to keep their data safe. If a breach does occur, clients who use our Data Security Dashboard can immediately connect with someone who is certified by the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP). These US based professionals are well versed in the data breach reporting requirements of over 300 state and federal regulatory bodies and 105 nations. After the IAPP-certified professional is contacted, they will quickly begin to assess the extent of the breach to determine if the breach needs to be reported, and if so, how quickly and to whom. Our IAPP-certified professionals are also available to walk clients through the process of notifying their customers of the breach if it’s necessary to do so.
Using the Breach Reporting Service takes the stress out of reporting and notifying customers of a breach. Determining if customers need to be notified and if so, how quickly they need to be notified is complicated. Laws can vary depending on the industry and the location of the business or the customer. Figuring out which regulations apply can be a time-consuming and frustrating process, but it doesn’t have to be thanks to our Breach Reporting Service.
This service can also ensure that clients are not fined by regulatory bodies for failing to report the breach in an appropriate time or manner. Failing to comply with these regulations can cost a business thousands of dollars, so this service is well worth the investment.
